Creating structure in a blog

I know blogs are intended to be free form and open-ended. I still feel the need to have some structure but I don't know which direction to take. I would like for my blogs to be a combination of social interaction, a forum with sections devoted to related topics, a location for reference material and a place to capture thoughts for future posts. A friend just stopped by and showed me his blogs on WordPress.com. It seems to have some features I want but can't find in blogger so I may be migrating to WordPress in the very near future.
